Arriving at the reuse and recycling centre in a car, on a motorcycle, by bicycle or on foot

This information is for car users, cyclists and pedestrians only. If you will be dropping off your waste using a van, or a car with a trailer, please click here.

You can drop off recyclables or household waste (but not large quantities of DIY-type waste or any trade waste) using a car or motorcycle, by bicycle or on foot, free of charge. The following types of vehicle (without trailer) are allowed:

  • Cars (saloons, hatch, estate etc.)
  • 4 x 4 passenger vehicles (not open backed models)
  • People Carriers
  • Black Cabs
  • Motorcycles
  • Bicycles

Note: Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger or Mercedes Vito type vehicles are not deemed to be cars.

Your car must not be modified to carry goods (e.g. seats removed, side and/or back windows blacked out) and must be under two metres in height.

Before you visit

If you are using the Smugglers Way site and your vehicle exceeds two metres in height, or you are towing a trailer, you must enter the site through the Main Entrance (the same entrance the Refuse Collection Vehicle drivers use) and pre-notify the Authority of your arrival.  Click here to pre-notify online now, or call your local council on the relevant number shown below. Please note you will need to provide valid ID relating to the property from which the waste is coming.

  • Hammersmith and Fulham: 020 8753 1100
  • Kensington and Chelsea: 020 7361 3001
  • Lambeth: 020 7926 0524
  • Wandsworth: 020 8871 8558
  • Westminster: Online pre-notification only

Please note that you will now have to lift your waste or recycling over a 1.1 metre safety barrier into a container below, so where possible make sure your items are light enough to lift yourself if you are visiting the site alone.  If an item is particularly heavy and requires two people to load it into the car, then it will take two people to offload the item and lift it over the barrier into the container.

You are visiting a recycling and waste disposal site. Please make sure you are wearing suitable clothing and, in particular, appropriate/sturdy footwear.

When you visit

You will not be allowed to bring materials into the site on foot from a vehicle parked outside.

Please note that site staff are not obliged to assist with the offloading of vehicles, or the moving and lifting of heavy items.  If your items are particularly heavy and cannot be lifted over the safety barrier or broken down please ask a member of staff where you can place them.
