Seven schools across our four boroughs have successfully completed our pilot food waste outreach programme, ‘Planet to Plate’. The initiative was designed to empower both pupils and school staff to take meaningful action against food waste.
Throughout the pilot, the programme focused on three core objectives:
- Identifying Savings: Guiding schools through pupil-led food waste audits and surveys to pinpoint exactly where changes could be made.
- Building Awareness: Delivering interactive educational sessions that explored the social and environmental impacts of food waste, alongside practical ways to tackle it.
- Boosting Recycling: Encouraging schools to maximize and correctly utilize their on-site food waste recycling infrastructure.
The pupils eagerly embraced the message, making personal pledges to reduce food waste at home and at school. The interactive sessions brought sustainability to life through a variety of hands-on activities. Children tasted delicious smoothies made from perfectly good, bruised fruit and invented their own recipes using older or “wonky” produce. The students also flexed their creative muscles by designing striking campaign posters and planting microgreen seeds in reused juice cartons.
